Since the beginning of April 2022, it is possible for a foreign citizen to obtain a Social Security Identification Number (hereinafter NISS) in an easier and more accessible manner.
The request for a Social Security Identification Number, according to the “Guia Prático da Segurança Social” (in English, Social Security Practical Guide) assigning a “NISS ON THE SPOT for Foreign Citizens”, can be made by the foreign citizen himself, by a legal representative or by the Employer if there is an employment relationship.
Until now, the request was made at the Social Security offices by appointment when requested by the foreign citizen or, if requested by the Employer, through the institutional email of the District Centre that covers the headquarters of the company.
The digitalisation of the procedures that has been noted, greatly precipitated by the pandemic, now has its final concretisation in the possibility of making the request for the attribution of the NISS “on the Spot” to foreign citizens, online.
The online application does not dispense, however, the collection of the necessary documentation for this attribution, as an example:
- Full name;
- Date of birth
- Place of birth;
- Nationality;
- Marital status;
- Identification document number from your country of origin;
- Residence;
- Taxpayer number (if already assigned).
We will continue to keep an attentive eye on labour relevant modifications.
